Self Care starts at home.
We all hear the term self-care. Perhaps you’re really good at making time to recharge your energy, or maybe not. Whether you realize it or not, your home situation plays a huge impact on your day to day life and personal well-being. You start and end your days in the confines of those walls and windows. Let’s take a look at how your home can impact well being, and how home care is self-care.
Why Do We Often Fail at Self-Care?
Most of us are overwhelmingly busy, have stressful jobs, or are too consumed with technology to make time for ourselves. Me-time usually takes last on the agenda. What’s even worse, sometimes one may feel guilty about taking the time required to take care of ourselves. So getting started with self-care can be challenging.
First and Foremost(and this goes for any room of your home) CLEAN! Cleaning and decluttering your space is proven to have mental and physical benefits, not to mention you’ll clear the “I know I should clean but maybe later” thought cycle from your brain. That may be a huge stress-reliever in itself 😉
Darcey Rojas, a healthy home designer, says “A clutter-free environment allows you to perform tasks of daily living more efficiently because everything you need is readily available and within reach,” she says, adding this leads to healthier habits, and don’t we all want healthier habits?
Bedroom:
Sleep can have a huge effect on how you feel both emotionally and physically. Not getting enough can even cause major health issues. But stress and other distractions can wreak havoc on our sleep.
Using your bedroom to maximize the quality of your nightly sleep can be quick and easy with a little motivation and determination 🙂 You want to make sure you are getting REM sleep each night, so your room should be free of distractions if possible. Try to avoid putting screens in your room, such as a TV, as the light from screens can inhibit your REM sleep in the future. If light wakes you up earlier than you need to be, try installing black out curtains.
Kitchen:
Some would say the kitchen is where you prepare meals that nourish and bring energy throughout the day. What you consume certainly has an effect on your health and well-being. If you avoid your kitchen and opt for quicker, easier fast food, that may be affecting you more than you think.
By giving yourself easy access to your frequent and everyday tools with a utensil holder or a universal knife block, you may feel less overwhelmed and more excited to get cooking with those healthy and comforting meals.
Bathroom:
A classic self-care scene: Warm bubble bath, facemasks, a glass of wine, maybe even some candles… Sounds great already! But what truly can make a difference to your daily well being is taking a close look at your morning and night routines. Are you grabbing your toothbrush then hitting the road, or do you take the time to say hello to yourself in the morning? Creating your own ritual to give your self space to wake up in your body can really impact the rest of your mental energy throughout the rest of the day.
Of course, if you have yet to curate your own self-care bath ritual, check out these ideas for some inspiration 😉
